Aberdare Leader

Inquest on Hirwaun Miner.

An inquest was held on Monday on Edward Brookman, aged 39, of High Street, Hirwaun, who died at the Aberdare Hospital from injuries received at Tower Colliery on November 24th.

Sister M. Williams, Aberdare Hospital, said that there could not have been much delay in taking the man to the hospital. He died from shock following severe injuries, including a fractured pelvis.

John Francis Williams, a fellow-worker, of 6 Merthyr Road, Hirwaun, said he was acting as a collier and helper to the deceased.  "We heard a pounce,” he said, “and we ran.  Brookman was caught by a fall of roof.”

Coroner:  How long did it take to get Brookman out? - About 15 minutes.

Recording a verdict of “Accidental death,” the Coroner commented that the place appeared to be amply timbered.   Brookman heard a pounce and in another second he would have got away.
