HIRWAUN GOLDEN WEDDING
Mr. and Mrs. Michael Burke honoured
St Teresa RC Hall, Hirwaun was the venue of a happy function on Tuesday week, when the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Michael Burke was celebrated. It was a surprise tribute for the respected couple, arranged by their eleven children.
Mr and Mrs Burke were married on June 13, 1900, at the RC Church, Ballymartin, County Down, Ireland. They came to Hirwaun 45 years ago. Mr Burke followed his occupation as public works foreman until his retirement some years ago.
Both are admired for their quiet disposition, love of family and friendliness. Mr Burke is 72 and Mrs Burke 70. Mrs Burke has one brother, Mr James McDade, still living in Ireland.
St Teresa Hall was gaily decorated for the celebrations, a first rate repast being tabled. Telegrams and messages of congratulations were received from far and near, and the five sons and six daughters proudly exchanged greetings with dad and mam.
Children present were Michael, John, Dan, Alec and Frank Burke and Mesdames Mary Mochan, Jennie Jones, Josephine Sweet, Eileen Evans, Nancy James, Kathleen Madden with daughters-in-law and sons-in-law also happily participating in the celebrations.
Varied choice entertainment was given by 16 grandchildren, whose items charmed their proud grandparents. Forty guests finally exchanged hearty handshakes with Mr and Mrs M Burke before the party broke up
